Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) claims between 350,000 to 400,000 lives each year in the U.S. SCA is the not the same as a heart attack. SCA occurs when the heart’s rhythm is suddenly changed or stopped abruptly. SCA is most often caused by the narrowing of two or more coronary arteries, but can be also caused by trauma to the chest and other medical conditions. The treatment for SCA is the rapid initiation of 9-1-1, CPR and an electrical shock provided by an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
